Placement Opportunities

FAQs

What types of placements are offered?
The Office of Service Learning and Community Action offers a variety of placements. They are:
Community Action Placements - Made for either individuals or groups, these placements are also known as "community service." They involve working as a volunteer with a Community Partner. The placement may be one-time or on going, but it is not tied to an academic course, or part of a course requirement.
Service-Learning Placement - Made for individuals, pairs, or teams, these placements are also known as "community-based learning placements." They are similar to Community Action Placements, but are always tied to an academic course and typically are part of a course requirement.
Internships - Made for individuals only, either for academic credit or without academic credit. Community Partners that accept Community Action Placements and Service-Learning Placements also often accept interns. Community Partners may list opportunities in our database, or they may also contact the Career Services Center or an academic department directly. This database does not claim to identify every possible placement, but it does provide a list of the current opportunities.

What is the difference between Community Action Placements and Community Service?
USF uses the term "community action" to include community service. "Community action" is our preferred term because it suggests positive change in the community and the individual. The term "service" can imply a unilateral action whereas USF believes both the volunteer and the community benefit from "community action."
